Frisco Railway (SLSF) in Alabama — Birmingham Division
The St. Louis-San Francisco Railway (SLSF, commonly “the Frisco”) allegedly operated the following documented shops, depots, and yards in Alabama during the U.S. asbestos era (roughly 1900s through the 1980 Frisco to Burlington Northern merger):
- Birmingham AL — Frisco Birmingham Division headquarters, locomotive servicing facility, freight yard, and passenger depot
- Bessemer AL — Frisco yard and car-repair facility serving the Birmingham industrial district
- Sheffield-Tuscumbia AL — Frisco coal-line terminal and interchange on the Tennessee River (Muscle Shoals area)
Plaintiffs alleged in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation that Frisco Railway workers were allegedly exposed to asbestos-containing materials at these premises across the asbestos era. Frisco locomotive shops, roundhouses, and passenger and freight car repair facilities allegedly involved:
- Steam locomotive asbestos boiler lagging and firebox packing (through 1953 Frisco full-dieselization)
- Diesel-electric locomotive asbestos-fabric traction motor winding insulation and asbestos arc chute plates in control cabinets (Alco RS and GP-series units)
- Asbestos exhaust manifold and turbocharger gaskets on Alco 244 and EMD 645 prime movers
- Passenger car asbestos-cement body insulation panels and Vapor Clarkson steam generator lagging
- Freight car asbestos brake shoe friction (WABCO and Symington-Gould brake components)
- Roundhouse and shop asbestos pipe covering on steam mains and asbestos-fabric arc chute plates in shop switchgear
- Refractory in the shop and roundhouse steam-plant boilers used to heat facilities and provide compressed air
Workers Allegedly Exposed at Frisco Alabama Operations
Plaintiffs allegedly worked at Frisco Alabama shops as members of these trades:
- Locomotive engineers, firemen, and hostlers (cab exposure to boiler lagging and traction motor arc chutes)
- Machinists (roundhouse steam locomotive overhaul and diesel prime mover rebuild)
- Boilermakers (locomotive firebox refractory work through the steam era)
- Pipefitters (steam heating, compressed air, and locomotive water/steam piping)
- Insulators (locomotive boiler lagging and shop steam-plant insulation)
- Electricians (locomotive traction motor rewind and shop switchgear)
- Carmen (freight and passenger car brake, body, and heating work)
- Yard laborers and switchmen (brake dust exposure in classification yards)
FELA — Railroad Workers Have a Different Statute
Frisco Railway workers allegedly exposed to asbestos on the job are covered by the Federal Employers’ Liability Act (FELA) rather than state workers’ compensation. FELA claims have their own limitation periods (3-year discovery rule), causation standards (any part), and procedural rules. Historic Frisco claims may be consolidated with successor Burlington Northern (later BNSF Railway) filings.
